Circular Materials Challenge BPA wins

01  What is bisphenol A (BPA)?

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical used in the manufacture of polycarbonate, hard plastics, and epoxy resins.

02  Where is bisphenol A (BPA) used?

Items packed in plastic containers

Canned food

Cosmetics

Feminine hygiene products

Thermal printer receipts

CDs and DVDs

Home electronics

Spectacle lenses

Sports equipment

Dental filler seals

03 Why is bisphenol A (BPA) widely used?

The addition of BPA to plastic products can give plastics many excellent commercial properties, such as transparency, durability, lightness and impact resistance, and has significant advantages in preventing organic acids in vegetables and fruits from attacking metal containers through plastic coatings.

04 How does bisphenol A (BPA) affect us?

BPA is structurally similar to estrogen, it also binds to estrogen receptors and affects physiological processes such as growth, cell repair, fetal development, energy levels, and fertility. Additionally, BPA may also interact with other hormone receptors, such as thyroid receptors, and affect thyroid function.

Studies have shown that Chinese residents are generally exposed to BPA. The harm of BPA is manifested as endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity, immunotoxicity, genotoxicity, carcinogenicity, teratogenicity and mutagenicity. Long-term exposure to BPA can cause psychological anxiety, lead to obesity and its complications hypertension, diabetes, and chromosomal effects.

According to Science, a team of researchers at the European Food Safety Authority has explored the biological effects of the lowest doses of BPA. The study found that as exposure to BPA in mice increased, so did the number of immune cells that play a key role in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Based on this finding, the Panel recommended that the exposure limit for BPA be reduced to 1 part per 100,000, i.e., to 0.04 nanograms. The move could point to a new approach to regulating potentially dangerous compounds.

05  What can we do to avoid harm?
